Background information on the NAi exhibition "Daniel Libeskind - Beyond The Wall":

On 5 September 1997 an exhibition of work by Daniel Libeskind will open in the Main Room of the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI). The work to be exhibited is composed of architectural models and drawings of his studio, as well as objects and material that have had a great effect on the work and philosophy of Libeskind. The exhibition space has been designed by Libeskind together with Cecil Balmond of the engineering firm Ove Arup & Partners. The design of the planes and walls of the exhibition proposal transforms and alters the original exhibition hall as the public knows it - a new understanding of the future.

The exhibition will be held in the Main Room of the NAI and it makes use of the 8,100 m3 of exhibition space. Its design is based on a spiral-form labyrinth of inclined and angled walls and planes, and was inspired by the design for the extension to the Victoria & Albert Museum. The tallest wall of the steel structure extends from a height of 9 metres to 2,5 metres at its lowest. The design development and construction drawings were once again a profound collaboration with the renowned engineering firm of Ove Arup & Partners. A structure of steel U and C profiles from Hoogovens Starframe is faced with steel sheets in which vitrines are recessed. In these vitrines and in the labyrinth a large number of models and drawings of Studio Libeskind will be exhibited, as well as objects and material that have influenced Libeskind's work.

Both the construction and the exhibits will be illuminated with a lighting design by Zum Tobel Staff.

Many companies have reacted enthusiastically to the announcement of the Daniel Libeskind exhibition and are supplying materials as well as ideas on the production of the installation. The NAI is supported by Hoogovens Steel and Hoogovens Starframe who are providing the steel sheets and frames and are actively involved in construction of the installation. Other enthusiastic sponsors contributing materials and ideas are: Cultuurfonds Bouwfonds Nederlandse Gemeenten, Zum Tobel Staff, MAB Groep, Adolf Würth, Dura Bouwgroep, Volker Stevin Ontwikkelingsmaatschappij, Hoogovens Steel Strip Mill Products, Bruynzeel Multipanel, VNC, IBC Vastgoed, Leebo Bouwsystemen, Eerste Nederlandse Cement Industrie (ENCI) and OOO Internet Services.
